Virtual Training on Essential Laboratory Diagnostic Tools for Malaria Elimination

Background and Rationale

In order to support the WHO goal in global malaria elimination, the Faculty of Tropical Medicine,    will organize a virtual training on “Essential Laboratory Diagnostic Tools forMalaria Elimination” during 16th-18th March 2022. This training includes online multimediapresentations and virtual laboratory demonstrations. The course content will be focused on laboratory diagnostic tools suitable for both resource-limited and well-equipped settings. The materials will encompass malaria microscopy, rapid diagnosis tests, fluorescent spot test,G6PD test for Plasmodium vivax treatment, and PCR techniques. Lecturers will be the experts from the Faculty of Tropical Medicine who are highly experienced in research and teaching. Participants will comprise technical staff, public health personnel, doctors and related professionals from around the world. We are expecting 40-50 participants who have basicbackgrounds in malaria diagnosis or management, as well as others who are interested inlaboratory diagnosis for malaria control and elimination.

Course Objectives

Upon the completion of this training course, participants will be able to:

Describe how to correctly
perform various malaria
laboratory techniques.

Describe how to correctly

laboratory techniques.

Explain the importance of
malaria laboratory diagnostic
tools for malaria elimination.

Course Content

1. Impact of malaria diagnosis on malaria elimination
• Proper tools for pre- and post- elimination phase
2. Best practice to choose malaria diagnostics
• How to choose proper/good rapid tests for diagnosis since there many
companies selling rapid tests in the markets,
• When using PfHRP2 or pLDH,
• How to know blood having pfHRP2 deletion,
• How to detect very and very low parasitemia in blood smear
• Molecular diagnosis for malaria
3. Microscopic examination:
• What are the criteria for a gold standard reference microscopist
• How to be used as gold/reference standard
• What is required to be the expert microscopist
4. Quality assurance for malaria diagnosis
• common and errors in malaria diagnosis
• what will be needed for quality assurance in malaria diagnosis,
• basic requirement to maintain quality of diagnosis for limited resource & facility
